If not, old holes are filled and new ones drilled, with care taken on veneered or wrapped surfaces to avoid chipping. Door handles also need the spindle and latch to be compatible, so the lock set is checked.
Results depend on the surface and the handles chosen. Heavy handles on thin or damaged doors need reinforcement, and humid bathrooms are tough on some finishes.
