Decorative ceilings are built from a framed structure with boards shaped into steps, circles, coffers or curves. Lighting is often woven into the design, with concealed strips or recessed fittings picking out the edges. The more complex the profile, the more setting-out, cutting and finishing time is involved, and the more important accurate measurement becomes.

Design should suit the room. Heavy, multi-layered ceilings can overwhelm low or small rooms, while generous spaces such as villa majlis or double-height lobbies can carry more detail.
